SEPTEMBER MEETING IS THIS WEDNESDAY THE 15TH

I know it’s been awhile but I thought I’d give everyone a break from Summer Smash and hot wheels for a little bit. Summer Smash was a huge success with almost 400 people through the doors, not to mention the many walk ins we had all weekend long. Everything went so well. The weather was great for the Saturday cruise with close to 100 cars showing up, this will certainly be an event every year at the Smash. We all love cars and the cars that were at the Smash from Pope Design, M&S, Jimmy Chavez and Liberty just highlighted the great time we all had. I know Mattel had a good time and please go to www.hotwheelscollectors.com to read how Chris Parker enjoyed the event. We have signed the hotel for the next two years so we are underway with more plans for another great year. I would like to thank everyone who attended the Smash it was great to see old and new friends.

People came from the United Kingdom, Brazil, and all over the United States. The Summer Smash Staff is to be commended for their hard work and dedication to the Smash and I will always be dedicated to them. The real success is the fact that we have sent another child to Disney, which is truly the greatest achievement of the Rhode Island Hot Wheels Club.

At the September meeting we will start again having a great time, there will be plenty to talk about and plenty to do. I hope to have a large turnout, there will be some surprise raffles and great displays of all the newest things that hot wheels is coming out with. Your not going to want to miss this meeting.

The feature race this month will be the Drag Bus always a great time so break out your favorite bus and let’s race.

September 18^th is Kmart/sears days so get ready for some more cool variations. And a chance to get the “ThunderRoller” mail away.

October 13^th Mattel will put on there convention in Los Angeles California, this is the grand daddy of all Convention, if you can make it, don’t miss it.

As bad as things seem at times in this country and in our own backyard we can always count on Hot Wheels to brighten our day. Hope to see everyone at the next meeting it will truly be a good time.

Just to keep everyone on track the Rhode Island Hot Wheels Club is developing a new web site full of cool stuff. E commerce, chat rooms and such, stay tuned for the launch.

Kevin is a 10 year-old boy who lives in Pawtucket, RI with his mother, father, and two older sisters. Kevin loves to play soccer and video games with his friends. His favorite food is pizza, so it's no surprise that his favorite restaurant is Papa Gino's! He loves the movie "Back to the Future" and his favorite subject in school is Finance.

Kevin's wish is to go to Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. He says he has always wanted to go to Disney World with his family, and we are so excited to make his dream a reality!

ATTENTION!!!!

If you’re planning on coming to the Smash on August 19th thru the 22nd you need to get your rooms reserved. We had a meeting with the hotel today, 7/20/10, and it will sell out like last year. Please call the Crowne Plaza Hotel before 5pm any weekday and make your reservation (401 732 6000). If you’re not selling or trading out of your room ask for reservation to their sister hotel. You can save a few dollars and have free shuttle service to the Crowne. They told us today that the reservation desk may say sold out but they will get you set up at the other hotel or put you on the waiting list.
Tickets to the Smash are going fast so don’t delay, this show is bigger and better than ever. Check Web site for more updates.

Tuesday night meeting & Summer Smash update

It is Hot here in Rhode Island and your club is getting even hotter for Summer Smash 3. Everything is moving along in a great way. The newest announcement is Diecastspace.com is bringing former Mattel designer “Wayne Scott” to the Smash Wayne will be there giving you the inside scoop on the cool designs he’s worked on over his career. Wayne was responsible for all the work on our Deco Delivery last year. So don’t miss your chance to meet Wayne. Plenty more coming your way in the car department. M&S customs have done some cool cars for the the event as well as our ladies cars and charity race cars. They have also done some cool Convoys, Haulers and Busses so don’t miss out on a chance to get one of these cool cars. Jimmy “The Boxman” Chaves also has some great 3 d designs to bring to the Smash so get ready for those. Pope Designs did a Cadillac Funny car that is a must have. Hall of Fame Designer V Man will be at the Smash with some cool cars and he also did the cars for the Celebrity Breakfast. Dave Chang will also be doing a cool Challenge race for everyone with the competition laid right on the backs of the designers, make sure you bring your fastest cars to take on the pros.

Liberty Promotions always throws a cool party and this year will be no exception. Fireball Tim will be on hand with Cruisn Bruce Palmer with a super Saturday Cruise you won’t want to miss. Is there more? You bet there is Special guests from all over the country, prizes, trophies and the list is endless. Get your tickets fast , remember last year was a sell out.

Don’t forget the meeting is this Tuesday, with a convertible feature race and a carded stock race. The kids from the Johnny Lightning club are also invited for a special kids race with prizes.

There will be plenty of new cars on hand for buying and trading as well as a cool display of all the cars from Orlando’s recent convention. Membership cards are also ready so make sure you pick yours up at the club table.

Stephen A. Berthiaume 1957 - 2010 HOLYOKE - Stephen A. Berthiaume, 52, of Holyoke passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield, MA he was the son of Claire (Veins) Berthiaume of Holyoke. He was a lifelong resident of Holyoke and a 1975 graduate of Holyoke Catholic High School. He worked at C & S Wholesale in North Hatfield. Steve was an avid Hot Wheels collector and card collector. He was a proud member of the Connecticut Valley Diecast Hot Wheel Club. Steve also enjoyed going shad fishing, playing softball, football, and basketball. He refereed for many years at Sacred Heart CYO Basketball league in Holyoke, but most of all, he will be missed by the family and friends he has left to cherish his memory. Besides his mother, he leaves his beloved wife of 33 years Debra (Williamson) Berthiaume of Holyoke; his loving children, Janara and her husband John Healy of Holyoke, Amy and her husband Edward Denette of Ludlow, his caring & loving grandchildren; Juliana, Lilyana, Jack, Henry James, Mia, Paige, Mason, and Gabrielle; his brothers, Paul and his partner Sue of Sunderland, Ronnie and his wife Lynn of Holyoke, a sister, Michelle Gorecki and her husband George of Holyoke, a very special sister-in-law & brother-in-law Theresa and David Wodecki of Holyoke, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends throughout the community. Hope everyone is doing well, Summer is here and the kids are getting out of school and our club is heating up for one of the biggest shows the East Coast has ever seen. Plenty of new guests and some great cars being done by Liberty and Pope designs as well as Jimmy Chavez and V man. I’ve seen some of the cars being done for the Smash and there is no doubt these will be some of the best castings you will ever see. I’m really excited about this years show. There will be a special Celebrity Breakfast Saturday morning for our good friend from Mattel “Chris “Rodger Dodger” Parker, the breakfast will be in the ticket packet if you decide to join us. We will be limiting the event to only 100 people with a special “V Man designed car just for this event. You won’t want to miss it.
I’m glad to say the hotel has reserved many rooms so far so this event should be a sell out, get your tickets as soon as you can and don’t forget to make your room reservations.
We have just secured the rights to sell the new Hot Wheel playing cards they will be on sale for 2.00 we should have them for this meeting but we will have them for sure in the months to come and of course at summer smash.
Joe Kelly from “Car Room Magazine” will also be coming to the Smash bringing a live internet feed direct from the Crowne Plaza. Joe will be showing the world what a great time the Smash will be.
Our good friends at diecastspace.com should have the new web site up, it will be very user friendly and I encourage everyone to check it out.
Just talked to Toy Pallet and he will be bringing plenty of new garage cars and basic cars to the meeting from the new K case, the new 30 car set will also be on display at the June meeting.
It’s always good to do a favor for our fellow members and I want to thank everyone who donates every month to help George D out of all the flood damage he has endured. So from me and George thank you very much.

Don’t forget June 24th through the 27th will be the big Orlando show put on by CJ of Diecastspace.com if you have the opportunity to go to Florida this Summer don’t miss this show.

Finally some nice weather, hope everyone is enjoying this time of year. The hot wheel world seems a little quiet these days, even though Mattel has put out some great new models. Plenty of Muscle cars and Military looking vehicles and of course some exotic models to try on the track. I must say the delivery series and the Garage cars are the best. Plenty of quality going into some great castings.
Last months meeting was very well received. We raised money for our friend George, not to mention some great racing and brisk buying and trading. With just over 60 people in attendance we had a great time. Special thanks to Bruce Pascal for his redline donation to George. George was very thankful and will be starting his new hot wheels collection with those on top of his list.
Summer Smash 3 is coming along great. We picked up some sponsors to help defray costs and added a Trivia Contest by Bob Parker as well as the announcement of Fireball Tim being in attendance. Tickets are selling at a good pace and Liberty has sent us the first designs for the new Drag Bus which will be given out to all the ticket holders. Just reminders make sure you reserve your rooms at the Crowne Plaza and get your tickets as soon as possible. This could be a sell out.
Any one who can help us gather the casting RODGER DODGER would be a big help. We need them for the Smash. Any dodger will be fine if you have them let me know.
I couldn’t make it to the Nationals in St Louis but I heard it was a great time. We will have some of the cars at the meeting for display, come check them out.
Don’t forget June 24th through the 27th will be the big Orlando show put on by CJ of Diecastspace.com if you have the opportunity to go to Florida this Summer don’t miss this show.

Dan will be coming home from the desert, rumor has it that he invaded a cave in Afghanistan and found redlines; he will be bringing them to the next meeting.
Joe Small will be having his anniversary dinner this weekend and he’ll be passing out Super Treasure hunts to all that attend. Joe you are a hell of guy.
After months of fighting Mattel will be making a new casting for Summer Smash, they have not released any more info but they tell me it will be cool.
Family dollar will be selling all the toys from the recent floods in there stores, hope you don’t care how the cardboard looks.
Armand will be bringing cases of cars to the next meeting. He recently got his store to sell him the cases so they could avoid the running in the morning.
Mattel has said that next year their going to make a Treasure hunt, a Super Treasure hunt, and a Kmart Treasure hunt. HONEST.

I don’t know where to begin but hopefully I won’t put you to sleep and you can get some good info about our hobby through this blog.
First I want to thank all our members and friends who have come to our aid in helping fellow members through the horrible floods of March. We will have several fund raisers from now until Summer Smash to help our fellow members. I want to give a special thanks to Bruce Pascal for his generous red line donation to George D. Diecast space .com has also started a fund raiser on their site to help raise money, big thanks to CJ a true friend to the Rhode Island Hot Wheels Club. If anyone would like to donate please do so at the club table this Tuesday night. Give your support and be at the next meeting in these tuff times it is important to join together and help out the best we can. There will also be a 50/50 Raffle at the club to raise money; big prizes so don’t miss out.

Summer Smash is moving along on schedule there will be a mass mailing coming very soon. Plenty of new events and cars will be at the Smash so don’t miss out. The Smash has reached out all over the country as the number one east coast show. Tickets are selling well so don’t miss out, last year was a sell out and this year should be no different. Make sure you reserve your hotel rooms soon.

Plenty of new cars are out many of them will be on display at the next meeting. Along with many other cool hot wheel items. I would like to encourage others to bring displays in of your favorite cars, it is always cool to see what people collect.

This months feature race will be police cars any diecast company is fine but it has to be a police car no wanna be’s.

Last months meeting was great with plenty of activity but our special guest from “Children’s Wishes” gave us the blessing to send our 4 year old wish child to Disney. Nicholas is a great little boy who we will work very hard to raise the money to make his wish come true, please
be generous.

This Saturday is the Lincoln Johnny Lightning club and the Connecticut Valley meeting Please attend and support our other clubs. Sunday is the Southern New England Hot wheel Club and the third Sunday is the East Coast Real Rider Club Meeting. It is a lot of fun to go to our neighboring clubs it’s a real good time.

APRIL RUMORS...

Liberty Promotions will be building a Rhode Island club car for Mattel, It will be the first car in the mainline for 2011 and will also have a limited amount of rebel runs, the casting has not been announced.

Toys r us will be giving out open mystery cars in the Attleboro area on Mothers Day, the person who opened them will be charged on the same day for shoplifting.

It has been reported that Johnny Lightning will be using Hot Wheel chassis in there 2011 line to compete in the racing forum, This can’t be true.

Hot Wheels have been showing up in Afghanistan and from what I understand Danny has not been at his post for the last few mornings, is this possible.

The Hottest Casting since the Drag Bus is the custom Convoy, and Mattel has decided to stop making it.

Wal mart is promoting a Wal mart days, you will be able to buy one car every 5 minutes each store will have 200 cases the event will start at 7am on Friday and end at midnight . Treasure hunts will be one dollar and the mainline cars will be 2.00. This was reported on the internet I’m not kidding.

This is a letter that you hope in your life time you would never have to send. But after the recent floods of March a few members of the Rhode Island Hot Wheels Club have lost some of there most valuable collectibles. However our good friend George “D” Desomma, has lost not only some of his most valued toys but his business and his livelihood. Years of collecting and hard work washed away over a weeks time by mother nature. I am looking to help George and others with money and replacement of some of the better toys just to help cheer up a very sad and miserable situation. At the club we will set up a fund to help but any donations any of our members and friends would like to make would be very much appreciated. Every month we will have some kind of event to help this situation. This is a time to help a fellow collector and a very good friend. George has touched many of us with his great sense of humor and a big heart. He has never asked any of us for anything except friendship and I think it’s time to pay back. George is a proud man and I would appreciate if we keep this letter confidential until we present our generosity to him.

Winter is almost over and I can’t be any happier about that. Plans for Summer Smash are moving along. The Vending Machine will be here from Mattel and Liberty is busy designing cars for the big event. Looks like there will be some new events added to the Smash, as well as some of the classic events that we all enjoyed last year. Raffles, souvenirs as well as racing will be in the forefront of a fun event. And we could never leave out the best hospitality room in the country thanks to the hard work of George and Bev.

Our trip to the Super Convention in Vegas was unbelievable. Meeting some of the biggest names in Diecast and the auto world was an opportunity of a life time. The Rhode Island club is well established all over the country and after me and Roland and Ron got compliment after compliment for the great work we do it was really gratifying. I would like to publicly thank Ron, Cj and all the New England Clubs for making my son and I have an experience that we will never forget. I am forever grateful to all of you.

As for the March meeting there will be plenty of cool stuff on display from Vegas and some new mainline cars that have just been released. Also don’t forget this month feature race will be the “slowest car race”. Plenty of fun when we do that race.

We lost a very important member recently. Bob “Bob A.” Anderson has passed away. Bob was an avid racer and a young 78 when he passed. He will be missed and our sympathy goes out to his family. I hope there’s a race track in heaven.

We need a casting for our club car for 2010, so let us know what you would like at the next meeting.

This will be a big meeting with a lot of cool stuff and information so do your best to be there Tuesday night look forward to seeing everyone. Happy hunting.

A Letter from Jim - February

First let me apologize for not getting the newsletter out for January.
The expense of Summer Smash has caused the club to re-think the way
we handle the newsletter. The newsletters will now be posted on our new
online site! We hope to give you a more desirable looking newsletter
and save the club hundreds of dollars.

We had our elections at the January meeting and the elected
officers now include Ron Keech as treasurer and Dan Spaulding as
Vice President and I as President. Congratulations to the entire
membership of the Rhode Island Hot Wheels Club for another great year.

Summer Smash Is being planned and as of now the date at the Crowne
is officially August 19th thru the 22nd. We are getting ideas and
cars designed by Liberty, M&S and others and will keep you posted
through this media and the soon to be launched 2010 SummerSmash website.

2009 for sure was a year of plenty of cars to collect and choose from
and 2010 should not be any different. You will see Delivery cars
which I love, Garage Cars, plenty of exciting new mainline cars, as
well as Drag Strip Demons and more. Get ready to max out that credit
card or get a second job, there will be plenty to look for in 2010.

Me and a bunch of members will be leaving for Vegas to attend the
Super Convention put on by Diecast space.com. I want to thank
everyone who supported the trip and helped raise money to let me
and my son attend. I will not let our membership down, this was a great
thing you did for me and my family and I will never forget it.
A special thanks from me goes out to Ron Keech, Ken Cwikla and
Joe Small and their respected club members for everything.

With the newsletter taking on a new look and design, I would encourage
everyone to please submit pictures, articles of Hot Wheel interest and
any info that we can share. Remember this is your club get involved.

As everyone knows we here in Rhode Island love to race,
unfortunately we had an opportunity taken away from us do to a snow
storm to race the guys from CVD. All in good fun I’d like to challenge
those members to race their trophy winners on our track any time during
the year. Again all in good fun.

We are taking prize donations for Summer Smash anyone who would like
to donate up to the event prizes for the raffles would be greatly
appreciated. This months big donator was Kevin Clarke, big thanks to
him and his generosity.

In closing let me say it has been a great 14 years of being a part of
this club, and the 15th year will be no different.

According to my sources at the Cranston K Mart all the cars in the case
including the Taladega Treasure hunt has good year tires.
The super hunts have cooper tires.

Toys R Us in Warwick will be having a hot wheels event called giraffe days
Hot Wheels will be fifty cents and all opened mystery cars are free.

Mattel will be doing five packs for all the different conventions.
The summer smash 5 pack will feature Camaro's and Ferrari's. Imagine that.
Just a side note i understand they have asked liberty to do a VW Drag bus
5 pack and they are considering it. The cost at this time is at 150.00 Dollars
but will surely be a sell out.

The Papa Johns pizza Firebird promo is not a Hot Wheels car, rumor has it
Jim bought one. Shame on Jim.
